Details Netsuke — small, finely carved figures in ivory, wood, bone, lacquer, metal and porcelain— came into wide use as toggles for money purses, tobacco pouches, etc. in the Edo period (1600-1868). They remained popular, almost exclusively for men, until the beginning of the 20th century when traditional Japanese clothing for men went out of style. Pouches used to store tobacco were tied to the obi (the sash worn with the kimono), and the obi was pulled through holes in the netsuke to secure it, similar to how toggles are used to secure bolo ties.
